I’ve been mulling over writing this for a while, but, it’s I’ve never got round to it, partly because I’m lazy, and partly because I think some of you will be offended. Today though, I snapped, and I have to put it out there.

At G’s swimming lesson yesterday, the teacher asked them to perform a fairly simple task, climb out of the pool. You’d think a bunch of 8-10 year old kids who were fairly competent swimmers would be able to do this, on the whole, they did. Apart from one of them. This particular girl is about 9, she’s taller than G (no surprises there!), but she’s also extremely fat. She just couldn’t physically haul her ass out of the pool, it was like watching an overweight seal trying to get out of a pool. Despite the teachers best efforts (and some help) she just couldn’t get out. In the end she had to swim to the steps and get out that way.

I felt sad for her, everyone was watching, and seeing this happen. I also felt very cross that her parents had let things get this bad, she’s been steadily increasing in size, as have her siblings. If they carry on, all of them will be morbidly obese by the time they are teenagers. Horrid.

Then yesterday afternoon when doing some shopping at Tesco, there was a little girl, about six years old, who was clearly obese, weebling around the shop snuffling on crisps, I saw her several times and she’d eaten two bags! I really wanted to take them from her, give her an apple, and bitch slap her mother.

I did a bit of research and found some Government statistics showing that nearly a third of 2-15 year olds are overweight, which is very depressing. I just don’t understand WHY any parent would let their child get to that kind of size, is it diet? Lack of exercise? Genetics? Possibly all of them.

How can a parent let their child get that way in the first place? Surely it’s a form of abuse?
