I must admit – I hadn’t heard of it until yesterday when a slew of female friends started posting selfies without makeup (but mostly heavily filtered on Instagram) in the name of ‘Cancer Awareness’.
I’ve done a bit of reading and this ‘Cancer’ thing looks pretty horrific! I had to Google it and apparently one in three people will develop a form of it in their lifetime, and 910 people each day in the UK are diagnosed with it..WHAT?! This is news to me!
I’m not sure what is more insane, those stupid idiots who died playing ‘NekNomination’ earlier this year, or girls posting pictures of themselves without make up believing it will ‘raise awareness’ of Cancer. It’s like ‘#BoobyWednesday’ on Twitter is meant to raise awareness of Breast Cancer – no, it’s not, it’s just women posting pictures of their tits.
How can we raise awareness of Cancer? Well – we all know what it is, we all know that it’s not good, and it kills far too many people. We need awareness of the symptoms, the signs that it’s there, I don’t need to see someone I went to school with with no slap on.
I know that it’s ‘just a bit of fun’, but in the time it’s taken you to take a selfie, Instagram the fuck out of it, post it online with a ‘Urgh I don’t look very good’ comment, you could actually do something much more helpful. Text BEAT to 70099 and chuck £3 into the Cancer Research pot. Or if you can, go bigger and find out other ways to give some money to Cancer Research. Cancer can only be beaten by education, prevention, and CURE, not a selfie.
So please, stop with the selfies, let’s kick Cancer in the balls with some MONEY!
