The internet is a bit angry today – it’s pissed off about Halal Meat.

If you don’t understand what ‘Halal Meat’ is, read this. Put simply it’s a ritualistic way of killing an animal that is ‘okay’ for Muslim folk to consume under Islamic Shari?ah. It’s in the news today because Pizza Express have admitted their chicken is all now Halal, following Subway’s lead on removing Ham and Bacon from some of its stores and offering Halal alternatives.

Many people seem to be up in arms about the fact that Muslim Meat is coming over here, stealing all our Meat Jobs and taking our Meaty Benefits.

Whilst I don’t think the ‘Halal’ way of killing an animal is particularly pleasant, I’m not overly enamoured with the killing of ANY creature, no matter for sport or food. It’s not nice no matter how it’s done, whether their throats are slit, or they get electrocuted, you’re still killing something.

Generally, most people don’t give a hoot how the cute little lambs and chickens end up on their plates, it’s never really been of interest to most, so long as it comes in neat packaging and tastes meaty. Who cares? As a nation we’re happy to consume ‘value’ meat, with ground up pigs arseholes and trotters put in the mincer – but, when you start chucking in words like, Halal, Islamic, heck, even Kosher, people get nervous and scared.

If you’ve been to a curry house and had anything meat based you’ve probably eaten Halal Meat, no one really thinks about it, or even cares, it’s been that way for years! As soon as the middle class world of Pizza Express is messed with, we’re all up in arms and getting angry about it.

If you’re going to start getting all precious about the method of how your dinner is being slaughtered, perhaps try being a vegetarian? I *do* eat meat. Admittedly, I’m eating less these days, if I’m in a restaurant or picking up lunch somewhere, I’ll actively hunt down the (V) symbol to try something new. It’s become a little challenge of mine, and I’m really enjoying it – vegetarian food is delicious and satisfying – who knew?! I’m actually getting to the point where I think I could give up meat full time and not miss it, something I *never* thought would happen!

Eating Halal Meat won’t kill you, it won’t turn you Muslim, or make your skin darker, it’s just another way of killing an animal that will end up on your plate. Don’t like it? Don’t eat it.

Good point! I really don’t mind how it’s killed to be honest. I live with a veggie so eat a lot of veggie food, if I go out every now and then I like to have something meaty, as long as it tastes nice I’m not particularly worried!

I’m quite a firm believer in trying to respect the wishes of those close to you. I think If I were married to a veggie, I’d ‘convert’! 🙂

Welcome to the VEGGIE CLUB! You’re right. I do not rant about how people shouldn’t eat meat, as I believe in free choice. But when people are ignorant to how animals are killed and how cruel/unethical it is, it makes me cross.

Haha. Thank you. Do I get a badge? 🙂

I agree, and really, that’s a bit of the reason I’m eating less, when you think about it all – it’s a bit gross.

      I think I make an awesome #secretvegetarian

It doesn’t bother me in the slightest HOW meat is killed.. But when they take ham and meat off the market because Muslims don’t agree it should be eaten, then that’s crossing a line. No one is asking Muslims to eat the meat, it’s wrong to remove it from stores just because they don’t agree with it. What will be next? Hotdogs? Barbecues? It’s ridiculous. Meat is meat no matter how it’s killed, but everyone should have the right to eat whatever the hell they want and how they want it.

I don’t think anyone is ASKING Subway to change things, it’s a business decision they’ve made.

It’s not about how the animal is killed that people are bothered about it’s the fact that why should we have to eat halal if the Muslims won’t eat the meat that we slaughter because of their religion. We are getting no choice in the matter especially now that most schools serve halal meat only where is the fairness in that?

    • Kip Hakes says:

Right, so, ultimately, we generally don’t care how the animal is killed to get it on the plate. There’s no ‘Christian’ way of killing something, it’s just the faith of a minority that cares. So if the end result is the same, why should it matter to the majority how the meat got there?

      • Nicky says:

I think you will find that we are the minority or at least becoming the minority. Why should we have to start conforming to their beliefs which is what we are doing by having the right to eat what we want taken away because they don’t like how it’s killed.
