Update 10/08/18 – This is the latest version of the Sky Q app.
I love my Kindle Fire tablets, J has a little one, I’ve got a bigger one. They are cheap, and well built – but it’s not possible to run the Sky Q App on Kindle Fire.
Until now
As standard you can only get apps for the Kindle Fire / HDX from the Amazon App Store. Sky and Amazon are competitors to some extent, so you can’t get the Sky Q App via the Amazon App Store. Most Kindle Fire tablets actually meet the minimum spec. to run the Sky Q app. That means it’s theoretically possible to get the Sky Q App on Kindle Fire with a little hacking.
How to do it
First up, you need to ‘tell’ your Kindle it’s okay to install Apps that aren’t from the Amazon App Store. Do this by going into ‘Settings’ and then ‘Applications’ and switch ‘Apps from Unknown Sources’ from ‘Off’ to ‘On’. Click ‘Ok’ to the warning.
Next up, you need to get the application onto your Kindle. Fire up the ‘Silk Browser’ on the Kindle and head to –
kiphak.es/skyq-apk
This will ask you if you want to download the file to the tablet, you do – obviously. Once it’s downloaded it’ll ask if you’re sure you want to install it, and it’ll list the permissions required. Simply okay it all, and you’ll quickly see the Sky Q App on the Kindle ‘Carousel’.
Fire up the App, and if you’re connected to the same wireless network as the Sky Q box, it’ll connect to it automatically!
That’s it!
In theory you should be able to install and run it on any Android 4.1+ tablet, don’t complain though if it doesn’t work – I can’t guarantee it!
So, all in all, it’s pretty easy to run the Sky Q App on Kindle Fire / HDX!
NB. If you have trouble running the latest version, you can download the old version from here
Easy. Got it today 21 Sep 16 on my Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″ 3rd Gen. No problems. Thanks for this.
Thank you so much. The sky engineer told me there wasnt an app for my fire 10. However after he left I found your blog, downloaded the app, installed it and I am now one very happy bunny. it works a treat.
Worked a treat for me too on Amazon Fire 10.
Worked for me too. Downloaded and run to Fire HDX 3rd Gen. Easy done. Thanks Kip!
Happy to hear!
Hi, I’ve just tried this and it downloads the file, but then nothing else happens & it can’t open the file. Am I doing something wrong?
Says can’t open file on kindle fire hd 8 after downloading. Any ideas?
