One of the worst feelings in the world is when everything around you is going at the speed of light and you feel as though you’ve lost control. There is so much to do and so little time. How can you possibly accomplish all there is to do when everything is out of control?
1. You Can’t Control Everything – So Why Try?
The answer to that is really quite simple. You can’t, so don’t even try. Instead, learn how to relax. You’ll see things in a better perspective once you’ve gotten yourself under control – and that is the key. The only thing you can control is yourself. Even as a boss or administrator, you can’t change other people. You can only change your response to them.
2. Step Away and Give Yourself a Break
However, there are some problems you just can’t ignore. If you feel that your world is spinning out of control, step away for a few minutes. Close your office door, silence your phone and then take a short break. Perhaps you’d be better getting up from your desk and taking a short walk. A bit of fresh air and some gentle exercise can work wonders for relieving tension in your body. Give yourself a break. It works every time.
3. Get Comfortable
When you get home at night, do you find that you’ve brought home the day’s problems with you? Many people find that the best way to leave all that behind is to get out of those restricting work clothes and get comfortable. Women who wear heels to the office would do themselves a huge favor by leaving a pair of comfortable slippers just inside the door. As you enter, kick off those shoes and put on the best women’s slippers you can find that make your feet feel like you’re walking on a cloud. If that doesn’t help relieve the tension, not much will!
4. Guided Imagery and Aromatherapy
There is something to be said for the art of Eastern meditation and guided imagery. These techniques take time to master, but they all begin with learning to breathe deeply, slowly and rhythmically. Take slow deep breaths in and as you exhale, imagine the tension being released into the cosmos. Some people like gentle music or the sounds of nature in the background while others prefer candles and scented oils. Lavender works well and has been used for thousands of years for its calming effects. Try it sometime as you ground yourself and imagine you are in a forest or at the beach listening to the sound of waves lapping up against the shore. It’s amazing just how much stress can be relieved with guided imagery and aromatherapy.
5. Learn to Say “No!”
Finally, learn to say a resounding “No!” You can’t be all things to all people and there’s no reason why you should try. Some things, of course, need to be dealt with in the moment but if they can wait for a better time, it’s okay to say no. Recognize your limits and when you’ve reached them, don’t take on more than is healthy.
These are just five of many things you can learn to do to relieve stress when the world is spinning out of control around you.
