Staying Connected to Loved Ones When They Are On the Road

You might be used to being the one jet-setting across the world, but sometimes, it can be you sat at home in front of the television, waiting for your loved ones to return. In times like these, it can be hard being separated from someone for a long period of time, especially if you’re used to spending every day with them. It could be that your children have gone on their first school trip, or that your partner has gone away with work for an important event. Either way, it’s vital to stay connected, and there are some top tips to follow when you are feeling lost about what to do.

Establish ground rules

Before they go away, it’s a good idea to set some basic rules for you both to stick to in relation to communication. It’s unreasonable to expect them to be on their phone all the time; there will even be times when this is an impossibility. However, it’s more than fair to expect updates from them, especially as you will worry about their safety when they are away. These can be as small as you’d like them to be, such as asking them to let you know when their plane has landed, or in the off chance there is an emergency. You won’t be by their side, and you aren’t a mind reader. You won’t be able to keep up to date with them all the time, but this can help. It’s worth noting that it shouldn’t just come from them. While they are travelling, you will be having a life of your own at home, too. Updating them on what’s going on in your life will be equally as appreciated.

Check in regularly

For times when loved ones are away for much longer than a couple of days, it’s wise to check in with each other from time to time. This is a popular way of communicating with your partner when they have a work placement overseas for a few months. You will both be getting on with life in your respective locations, but it can be nice to feel like you’re experiencing it with each other by checking in. This can range from long messages over instant messenger, sending small gifts across the world, or even having a long phone call. You can do this using apps like Viber, which are useful for when your older child is spending a long time in gap year hotspots like India. Viber rates India are some of the cheapest, which means you can keep in touch as you would when they are at home.

Be patient

It’s easy to become lonely and frustrated when you aren’t receiving the usual amount of contact from someone you love. Unfortunately, there will be times where they are staying somewhere with no Wi-Fi, and when international data rates are too expensive to use. Not only this, but work trips and group holidays take up much more time than you might expect. They will take the first moment they get to fall asleep after meetings all day in scorching weather, and you can’t blame them, even if you haven’t heard from them in a few hours. It doesn’t mean they’ve become complacent, and it’s good to remind yourself that they will be home soon, so they should be enjoying their time as much as they can.
