As a welder, you should be aware that when welding, there is a high risk of potential hazards. The major source of these hazards stems from the arc welder which produces a lot of heat, sparks, as well as light that can affect the welder’s health. Hence, due to these hazards, it is important you have protective measures in place. Consequently, here are some tips you can use to keep you safe when welding:

1) Wear Welding Gloves
When welding, you will need to insulate your hands from the flame and heat produced effectively. For your safety, using welding gloves will protect you from burns, electric shocks.
Furthermore, the gloves enable heat endurance when handling hot objects. These gloves will also prevent your skin from thinning, wrinkling, or developing brown spots that form due to heat exposure. Hence, when purchasing gloves, you should not merely pick any gloves because they may not offer the required insulation and burn while in use. Consequently, when purchasing gloves find specific welding gloves that are heavy, flame resistant and which comes in varying sizes and designs based on personal preference.

2) Dress Appropriately
By dressing appropriately, it does not mean regular clothing because there are specific attires required when welding. The required attire includes flame-resistant clothing, like welding jacket with denim pants including leather apron and leather shoes. However hot or heavy the jacket is, it is not an excuse not to wear it since safety is paramount in this regard. Make sure you cover up your whole body since the sparks produced when welding may burn your skin. Also, any exposed skin will make you vulnerable to infrared rays and UV light whose effects are painful and damaging. Hence, being appropriately dressed will protect you from any potentially harmful effects of welding.

3) Weld In A Well-Ventilated Room
When welding, toxic fumes and smoke are emitted. They can affect your health when inhaled. The effects range from lung damage, certain cancer types, stomach ulcers, kidney damage including damages to the nervous system. Hence, avoid welding in a closed area since accumulated fumes and smoke will replace breathable air. Ensure the area has a good air inlet system like windows that ensure enough clean breathing air is available. However, if the room is unventilated, install an exhaust hood to remove fumes from the room.

4) Protect Your Eyes From The Light
When welding, there is a significant risk of eye injury. In some cases, when welding some eye damage(s) caused are reversible while others can cause permanent visual impairment when the eyes are unprotected. This eye damage can be caused by flying particles, exposure to UV & infrared radiation and chemical fumes that can irritate your eyes. Consequently, it is imperative to avoid directly seeing the light by using proper eye protection gear. The eye protection gears you must have are welding helmets, goggles, or safety glasses that are fitted with side shields.

5) Have Fire Safety Measures
The welding arc produces sparks that can lead to a fire or explosion. Therefore, you need fire safety measures in place to prevent the occurrence of such hazards. As a precaution, before you start welding, remove all flammable materials like gasoline, paint, oil, wood, and papers from the work area. Also, have fire extinguishers or a sand bucket around the work area. Furthermore, install a fire alarm in your workshop to alert for help in case of emergency.

For your safety, using welding gloves will protect you from burns, electric shocks. Furthermore, the gloves enable heat endurance when handling hot objects. These gloves will also prevent your skin from thinning, wrinkling, or developing brown spots that form due to heat exposure.
