Moving into a new house is an experience that few homeowners and renters describe as exciting. There’s planning, packing, moving and cleaning – all of which can consume you for quite some time. But moving into a new home can be fun if you know how to prioritize tasks.
Getting some pre-move-in projects done before moving in can save you time and problems down the road. Below are some tasks that need to be done before moving into a new home.
1. Change the Locks
One of the most important things to do before moving into your new house is to change the locks. You never know who else has keys to your place – the previous occupant may have given a key to relatives, neighbours, Realtors or maintenance guys. To secure your house, hire a locksmith to change the locks or install new lock sets yourself.
2. Clean the House
While some previous occupants will leave the house clean, some won’t. Either way, you’ll want to clean the entire house yourself. If time is tight, hire a cleaning service to do this for you. Cleaning the closets, drawers, counters, cabinets, carpeting and plumbing fixtures will make your house feel like a home. Additionally, you wouldn’t want to start a new phase in life with someone else’s crumbs and dust bunnies.
3. Paint the Ceilings and Walls
After buying a house, one of the first things you’ll want to do is to paint the walls and ceilings. Panting becomes a challenging endeavour when everything is in the house. So paint the new place when it’s still empty.
4. Get Some Closet Organizers
Having things organized and stored in the right places will make moving easier and less stressful. Closet systems that have numerous drawers and shelves and double hanging poles will give you enough space to put all your clothes, shoes, suitcases and laundry detergent. If the closets cannot accommodate everything, have professional installers outfit additional closets.
5. Install New Cover Plates and Other Electrical Devices
Many older homes have discoloured cover plates, mismatched electrical wall outlets, and damaged or rusted air vent covers. Replacing these with new ones can make the home feel newer and cleaner.
While replacing a light switch and other electrical devices requires only a screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and a few minutes, handling DIY electrical projects isn’t always a good idea. Only replace electrical devices when you’re comfortable working with electricity.
6. Clean and Service the Mechanical Equipment
This is another important thing you need to do after closing the house deal. Get the heating and cooling units inspected, cleaned and serviced and other routine maintenance tasks done. Ask your new neighbours about reputable companies in the area and hire them for the job.
Doing these pre-move-in projects will ensure you have a pleasant experience when moving into your new house. You’ll feel at home in no time.
