Now I work at home, I don’t put as many miles on my car as I used to. Yes, I have meetings and appointments on site from time to time. However, there’s no real daily commute any more. Back in the day I used to have an 88 mile round trip each day for work, and in a year I covered an obscene amount of miles! Vicki has her car that she uses each day for work – mine is now mostly a ‘weekend’ car. We tend to do the big journeys in it – trips to theme parks, or if we’re going on holiday. It’s a Renault Scenic, so a proper ‘Dad’ car. It’s not a 7 seater like my old Zafira, but it’s got bags of room for us, the kids, the dog, and luggage too.
It’s not the coolest, or quickest of cars – heck, it’s not even the most economical on fuel. But I like it. It’s comfortable – I can sit and drive hundreds of miles, even with my dodgy back, and I don’t even flinch. Plus, I love the fact I can remove the back seats completely for those runs to tip. Also, for an ageing French car, it’s been very reliable. I’ve had to fix a few window regulators and get the Air Con repaired. No nasty servicing surprises, or MOT failures. It’s also got VERY low mileage for the year, so it’s running well.
I have pondered though about upgrading my car. Wondering if I should get something smaller and more economical. I definitely couldn’t afford a new one, so I’d have to go second hand. However, that opens a whole new can of worms. No matter how many checks you do, it’s always possible to buy a lemon. Although most reputable second-hand car dealers will give you a short warranty for peace of mind. Whilst sometimes I’d like something a bit less ‘Dad’, I really like having the room and space. Plus, if I do upgrade, I’d have to sell my old car, which I’ve never found particularly stress-free. Although the Infographic below from Tyre City would definitely help with taking pictures for a classified ad! I suppose trading in might be a better option.
I reckon my car probably has another couple of years in it for me, but the temptation to get something shinier is STRONG!
