You can find apps that will let you do everything from order dinner to buy your groceries, and now you can download apps that will help you conserve energy. Whether you want to save money or make your home more eco-friendly, you can get some assistance when you use one of the following five top apps.

JouleBug

JouleBug is a sustainability app available for both Apple and Android devices that rewards you with badges and pins every time you make an eco-friendly choice. You’ll earn points for activities that include shopping at your local store, turning off the lights when you leave a room, and drinking tap water instead of bottled water. The app tracks the energy and money you save when you make more sustainable choices to let you see how you’re doing. Plus, you can connect with your friends and challenge each other to see who can get the most points.

greenMeter

If you’re looking for ways to save money at the gas pump, greenMeter, available for Apple devices, can help. This app detects how quickly you accelerate when you’re driving. With this information, you can learn how much fuel your vehicle uses and the carbon emissions it produces.

As you’re driving, the app will give you feedback on your driving habits so that you can make them more efficient and environmentally friendly. The app also lets you enter information about your vehicle, average fuel costs, and current weather conditions to make sure you get an accurate analysis.

Energy Tracker

Available for Apple devices, Energy Tracker is an excellent app for tracking your energy use around your home. The app lets you easily input information from your meter readings. Then you record your consumption of water, gas, and electricity to see where you can cut costs. The app also comes with a helpful reminder feature so that you can track your consumption every day to see if your energy consumption increases or decreases.

Wink

Wink links some of your favourite smart home devices for greater connectivity. For example, with Wink, your smart door lock can tell your home’s Wi-Fi thermostat and smart light bulbs to turn on when you unlock the door. You can also turn multiple appliances on or off with one swipe and operate your thermostat when you’re not at home, features which give you more control over your heating and cooling costs. Wink is available on Apple and Android devices.

MyEarth

Created by researchers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Human Ecology, the MyEarth app allows you to track the energy you consume every day to see how you can make better choices. Available for both Apple and Android devices, it also offers recommendations for practices you can do differently. To give you a visual idea of how your small actions lead to more positive changes, the app displays an image of a polar bear on an iceberg that increases in size as you save energy.

When you’re looking to cut your monthly household energy costs and make your home a more energy-efficient place, the popular apps described above can help.
