It’s not always easy to know where to begin when promoting your blog or small business. Being a start-up can be incredibly exciting when it comes to getting your idea to fruition, but it can also be a bit intimidating when it comes to promoting yourself online.
With so much competition around and so many potential platforms to investigate, you might even be put off from promoting yourself online. However, with a bit of knowledge, you can build enough confidence to promote your brand effectively.
Be clever about your social media
If you run your own creative writing blog and want to engage with the creative community, then you will find your reach hugely limited by just using platforms such as Facebook Pages and LinkedIn.
LinkedIn can be incredibly useful if you have connections from previous companies, but using sites such as Twitter and Instagram, along with the right hashtags, will help to ensure that you are approaching the right audience. However, you will need to ensure that you are using images and posts that reflect your brand and connect you to the right audience.
In order to do this you will want to do the following:
- Don’t spam your social media pages with repetitive posts and imagery. Be selective and careful.
- Don’t use platforms that won’t attract the right audience. LinkedIn might not bring your ceramics company the following you need.
- Use hashtags that are appropriate
- Use high-quality images and well-written posts. You should ensure every post is presentable
Invest in a personal website
Social media should be used to showcase your potential, while a website should be used to give a much more rounded picture of who you are. A website should have a tone of voice that suits your brand, and a well-written biography detailing what makes you interesting and unique as a business. If you don’t possess the skills of a website creator but want to check that, when you use website hosts such as WordPress, your site runs smoothly, using a host such as Onyx will ensure that things operate effectively at each end.
Gain some SEO knowledge
Now that you’ve got your website, you’ll want to be sure that it reaches somewhere near the top of search engine results. By doing some research into SEO techniques, or search engine optimisation, you will be able to create content that has a higher chance of being seen and read. Here are a few tricks to consider:
- Research the best keywords surrounding your business, you can find free generators online
- Link to other relevant sites, but try not to choose competitors with a similar product
- Ensure that every page and permalink has searchable terms such as ‘freelance writer in Brighton’
To begin with, you may not have many followers, which can be incredibly disheartening. Rather than trying to just create organic reach, it might be useful to network and communicate with people in your industry who have a much broader audience. By connecting and reaching out to other people you could just get the leg-up that you need.
The world is a much smaller place thanks to the internet, which is a huge benefit to local companies and start-up businesses. In order to successfully promote yourself, you will need to do a bit of research and a lot of focussing on your unique brand.
