There may come a time in your life that you have to take a cup and have your urine tested. If you don’t do any drugs, then you have nothing to worry about right?
Not so fast.
There are some weird ways that your test results could end up surprising you. If you don’t want to left feeling like a cat caught in the rain, then take a look at the following list of strange ways that your drug test could come back with surprisingly positive results.
Weird Way Number 1
Drinking a Certain Tea
If you really think about it, this one should come as no real surprise. In 2006, participants drank tea made from coca leaves and then tested positive for cocaine metabolites.
All of the participants drank the tea made from the leaves of the plant from which cocaine is derived, and then took a drug test 36 hours afterwards. The results? All participants tested positive for cocaine.
While this isn’t a widely favourite drink, it is available and can be accessed.
Therefore, think twice before drinking your next coca tea!
Weird Way Number 2
Medicine for Colds and Flu
Specific medication that you can get over the counter can interfere with your drug test results as well. This is because some drugs have ingredients that could end up positive on a drug test for amphetamines.
Look out for ingredients such as levomethamphetamine and brompheniramine. Both of the components have shown up as amphetamines on a drug test. In one review study, the popular Vicks inhaler yields such positive results.
However, it is important to note that the said study was conducted in 2008 and that newer tests can make a better distinguish among these ingredients.
Weird Way Number 3
Because so many states and other countries have legalized marijuana, there is a higher chance that you could be exposed to secondhand smoke. However, this exposure to secondhand smoke needs to be extreme, like the scenario of being in an enclosed space with someone smoking marijuana. In 2015, a study was conducted and found that six participants were in a confined area with six others. The second set of six was smoking marijuana.
In the end, several non-smokers (but not all) tested positive for THC.
However, the researchers also concluded that such a circumstance is unlikely to happen in real life due to the test occurring within hours of the exposure to the smoke.
The question of how you can test false-positive on a drug test is has been around since drug tests become commonplace in work environments and other situations. However, it has become even more prevalent since the onset of CBD legalization. Cannabis has been legalized in several states in America, has been fully authorized (within regulations) in Canada, South Africa, and several other countries as well. However, CBD, a cannabinoid found within the cannabis sativa plant, is legalized in even more countries. This is why people are asking, does CBD show up on drug test?
Weird Way Number 4
More Medicine to Test Positive
Some antibiotics can lead to a positive test result on a drug test. These antibiotics include fluoroquinolones and rifampin. Both of these antibiotics can lead to a positive test result for opiates.
Weird Way Number 5
Baby soaps, in particular.
This one will pertain to only a specific group of people; newborn babies and their mothers.
Shortly after birth, babies in the hospital are washed. Babies are also often put through screening tests, and a particular soap used can often result in a positive marijuana result. These tests are performed to determine whether or not the mother was using any drugs or substances during her pregnancy.
The following soaps could result in a positive marijuana result:
– Johnson & Johnson’s Head to Toe Baby Wash
– J&J Bedtime Bath
– CVS Nighttime Baby Bath
– Aveeno Wash Shampoo and Aveeno Soothing Relief Creamy Wash
Weird Way Number 6
Yes, another medicine that could show up positive on a drug test. Would it have been easier to lump all the medications at one point merely? Yes. But where’s the fun in that?
In this case, it’s Ibuprofen turn to have the center stage.
Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can sometimes lead to positive drug results. Although this study was conducted way back in 1990, the results concluded that high doses of ibuprofen (but the test subjects starting with 1x 400 mg per day and went up to 3 x 400mg per day) were tested positive for a variety of drugs, including cannabinoids found in cannabis. So, if you are about to take a drug test but have been using Ibuprofen, then you better let the testers know!
Weird Way Number 7
Unless you are part of the small percentage of people who have not watched Game of Thrones, then you would have heard that ‘milk of the poppy’ was often used as a treatment for pain. This is because poppy seeds actually contain morphine and codeine. Obviously, though, these are in small amounts however if you consume some products containing poppy seeds then you could be tested as positive for these drugs. In the late ‘80s, a group of researchers consumed cookies containing poppy seed filling, and after that, all tested positive for opiates. Yes, testing methods may well have been updated since then, but it still illustrates the point.
Testing methods are not the only thing that has since been updated; in the late ‘90s, the Department of Health and Human Services increased the minimum concentration of this drug to 2 000 ng/mL to factor in these potential false-positive triggers.
So, there you have it; 7 strange ways that a drug test can bring you surprising results. However, bear in mind that in most cases these are unlikely actually to happen unless you consume some of the triggers for false-positives in high amounts. If you have, then be sure to let your laboratory, employer, or tester know beforehand.
