Angle brackets – also referred to as corner brackets or angle braces – are fasteners that are useful for connecting two pieces of building material together. They’re usually used to create a 90-degree angle, such as during the hanging of a shelf against a wall or when creating a corner in a room. However, there are many ways these L-shaped brackets can be used and the only real limitations are your imagination. Still, before you start throwing angle brackets into every DIY project, it helps to know the basics of how these fasteners are supposed to be used. With that said, here’s a quick guide that will explain the basics of using angle brackets in your DIY construction or renovation efforts:

Start By Choosing the Right Kind of Bracket

Since the buying process is literally going to be your first step, it’s best to get this part right from the beginning to avoid having to make returns and buy other brackets to use as more suitable replacements later on. You can see what kind of options are available by browsing through the catalog of a popular angle bracket brand (i.e. – Trade Fix Direct: https://tradefixdirect.com/angle-brackets). Here are some factors that you’ll want to consider when comparing angle brackets:

  • Material/Metal Type – Try to opt for stainless steel or other stronger metals instead of cutting corners with cheaper alternatives like copper or aluminum-based composites.
  • Size Dimensions – Make sure the brackets are going to be a suitable size for what you intend to use them for. Of course, larger and thicker brackets should be used when joining heavier materials together.
  • Rated Strength – Load-bearing capacity is another feature that should be considered if you’re going to be using the brackets to join surfaces that will support a significant amount of weight.
  • Hole Configuration – Don’t forget to check the size and positioning of the screw holes to ensure that you’ll be able to use the brackets with the right kinds of screws.

You may also want to visit a local hardware store to ask for opinions about what kind of fastener you should used based on your specific building needs.

Don’t Leave Gaps When Attaching the Brackets

Once you have the right kind of brackets, it’s time to make sure you’re installing them properly. The installation is relatively straightforward, so the only really important precaution to take is ensuring that the bracket is pressed firmly against the material it is being joined with.

Make Sure Everything is Level

If you’re going to be using the brackets to mount a horizontal board, as in the case of a wall shelf installation, be sure to use a level before you actually attach the brackets. This will save you the hassle of having to remove and re-install them afterwards.

Watch a Few Videos First

Finally, watching someone else install angle brackets is by far the best way to get a solid understanding of how it’s done. Thus, before you install your first bracket, you might want to watch a few YouTube videos on the topic for visual guidance.
