The Bubbleworks operated at Chessington World of Adventures from 1990 until 2016. The ride system and building still remains, and is currently operating as The Gruffalo River Ride. It was one of the most iconic dark rides the UK has ever had, and is sorely missed by many.
Many people remember the music, others remember the fun scenes depicting Professor Burp’s factory at work.. However EVERYONE remembers the smell inside the building. With it being a water ride, there were a few ‘natural’ scents, such as general dampness, and the chemicals used to keep the water clean. However to aid with the immersion, there were a selection of scents pumped into the building. This created an unforgettable sensory experience.
But what was the smell in the Bubbleworks at Chessington?
Well, it was actually made up of three main fragrances – all of these from world renowned supplier of ride and attraction scents – Aromaprime.

You can actually buy the scents directly from Aromaprime, as either oils, spray, cubes, or blocks. If you purchase the oils, you need a machine to dispense them. Aromaprime sell commercial grade scent machines, but these are quite expensive.
I picked up this scent machine from Amazon, which is designed for aromatherapy oils, however it seems to perform well with the Aromaprime oils. It doesn’t require water, so isn’t expelling moisture and oils into the air.
