Something i’ve only just really started getting into is geocaching. Best described by Wikipedia as :-‘Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called “geocaches” or “caches”) anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and “treasure,” usually toys or trinkets of little value. Today, well over 540,000 geocaches are registered on various websites devoted to the pastime. Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica.[1]‘
Its a nice, simple and cheap way of getting your sorry arse out and about and a great little past time for me and the little one. I’ve never seen her walk so far in the strong winds, and all in the pursuit of some ‘treasure’! I got some software for my Nokia N95 from this site – its totally free and works so well. You can search for ‘caches’ and use the software to guide you right up to it. It will also allow you to read clues to locate it and also track the location on a cool little ‘radar’ like display. I’ve got an account set up on Geocaching.com to track our finds and also the software on the phone allows you to instantly mark a cache as ‘found’ when you’ve found it which will update your account – sweet!
