Summary

The Samsung S9+ is an amazing handset – I’d recommend it. The thing is though, if you’ve got Samsung S8+ already you can probably skip it. Whilst improvements have been made, there aren’t enough, in my opinion, to warrant an upgrade. So whilst I was sad to return the handset to Three, I wasn’t heartbroken. The Samsung S9+ is an evolution of the Samsung S8+, not a revolution.

Let’s talk about the Camera

So.. The camera (well.. cameras!) on the Samsung S9+ do give it the edge over the S8+ no question. The ‘Live Focus’ mode was an instant favourite for me. It gives you a ‘live’ bokeh effect where you can adjust the background blur. It allows you to make for great portrait shots, or food shots – I took a LOT of the dog with this mode. You can adjust the background blur after the photo has been taken too, which I like.

There is a ‘Food’ mode that makes the colours pop a bit and gives you a ‘focus circle’ which blurs everything outside it for the perfect Food Blogger flat lay.

The Super Slow Mo mode is pretty awesome. It works best in bright daylight, you can use it indoors however you might notice flickering. It has two modes, manual and automatic. In the automatic mode there is a square on the screen, and if any movement is detected within the square it records in Super Slow Mo. Which is the theory, however, in practice it doesn’t always work. Sometimes it will fire by itself, and then miss the movement it was meant to capture. Switching to manual mode allows you to press an onscreen button to trigger the recording which works perfectly. I was able to get some awesome Puppy Slow Mo!

The Samsung S9+ is touted to perform brilliantly in low light, and in my opinion, it did pretty well. To be honest, I didn’t capture as much Low Light stuff as I’d perhaps like, however, a really good place to test the nous of a camera is at a gig. I was pleased with the shots I took at the Flight of the Conchords – using the 2x Zoom and the Low Light capability the Samsung S9+ did as promised.
