A lot of dads just assume that style goes out of the window when you get to a certain age. After all, the media has a habit of deriding what older men wear. But fathers needn’t spend the rest of their lives in the fashion wilderness. They can enjoy looking stylish just as much as the cast of Loose Women.

The problem for dads, however, is successfully navigating what you might call the “awkward valley.” Too much stylistic input, and you end up looking like you want to apply for One Direction. Too little, and you risk becoming the long lost brother of James May.

So what are some foolproof style tips trendy dads can abide by? Let’s take a look.

Be Honest About Your Size

Older men should view their physiques as a sign of success. Yes, they’ve been ravaged by the passing of time. And yes, they’ve gotten hairy in places you never imagined hair could grow. But they’ve only gotten that way after years of providing for their families and working late in the office.

If you’ve packed on a few pounds since your secondary school days, not to worry. You can still be fashionable. A decent suit is ALWAYS flattering – get the right size and it helps to even out some of the lumps and bumps that are there.

Become A Neutral Block

Nobody would suggest for a moment that men should try to blend into the background. It’s just that neutral colours are almost always utterly inoffensive. Things like camel, olive and dark grey are your friends, especially whenpaired with blocky clothing. If you’re a little bored by the look, don’t worry. You can spice it up with a Breton stripes, pin stripes or plaids. But don’t indulge in your old favourites, like your pocket square or pulled up socks.

Invest Some Of Your Cash

If you’re at that dad age, there’s every chance that you’ve got a bit more money to spend. Now’s the perfect chance to splash out on so-called forever pieces. Pick stuff like navy blazers, knit sweaters and leather bombers that’ll last a decade or more.

Accessorise

The thought of accessorising might send a slight shiver down your spine. After all, isn’t that the name of the shop where your daughter goes to buy all her earrings?

But despite the unappealing sound of the idea, it does work from a fashion perspective. If you’re wearing neutral colours, you can quickly spice things up a little with a silk tie or a hand-knitted scarf. For the brave among you, you could also try a classic hat.

Don’t Go Overboard On Branding

Dad’s have never been big on branding. What’s the point of spending loads of money on clothes, when you can just get exactly the same thing on the cheap, right? Well, it turns out that that might be the right attitude after all. Dads who try too hard with their branding are often seen as “trying to be cool.” And, as we all know, that’s impossible. Stick to great fabrics and colours.
