I want to be able to wash my hair, and get on with my day. I can’t be doing with stressing about dying my towels, or hunting down spots of ‘shampoo’ that have turned the tiles purple. It’s added time and aggro for something that should be quick and easy. If I was really that phased by grey hair, I’d probably dye it, and worry about the mess in one hit.

( votes)I’ve accepted that I have grey hair – I’ve had it since I was about 15. It’s not taken hold of my hair – there’s just some patches here and there. Heck – I’m pleased to HAVE hair, so many people I went to school with are bald! I’ve dyed it once and it just looked a bit weird, so I’ve just let it be. However – the nice folks at Just for Men sent me their Control GX ‘Grey Reducing Shampoo’ to try.The pitch is a simple one – the Control GX, in time will slowly reduce the grey hairs. It’s a shampoo that cleverly targets grey hairs on your head, and it works on light grey to black hair. It’s not a dye, it’s a shampoo. Between 2-4 weeks of regular use it will start to do the job. When you have got the level of ‘grey reduction’ you require, you can stop.The idea, sounds brilliant – usually dying hair can be a bit obvious. One day your hair is full of grey, and bam, next day, it’s all gone. This creates a more natural method of hiding the grey – gently over time.The idea, is a good one. The reality is.. Well. Not so good.
It’s a shampoo, so you expect to wash in, rinse off.
Not with this shampoo. There’s a lot of instructions, warnings etc. You’ve got to be mindful of getting it on your finger nails (it can stain them) and watch out for it on tiles and surfaces for similar reasons. The first few times I tried it, it made my head feel ‘warm’. I do have sensitive skin, so I wasn’t surprised. It didn’t burn, or sting – it was just warm. After a few more uses, this stopped. I was SO mindful of not getting on my nails, and also not getting it splashed on the white tiles in the bathroom. My nails were fine. However there were little splodges up the tiles and it stained. This meant I needed to give area around the bath a damned good clean to remove it. I do love a nice sparkling bathroom, but it was ridiculous have to go to those lengths after EVERY hair wash. It can get messy if you dye your hair conventionally – however, that’s a one off. You expect a mess, and can clean it up, end of. However adding the peril of staining and mess into your regular hair washing routine feels counter-intuitive. So, once you’ve got over the warnings, staining and mess.. Does it do the job? There is no doubt to me, that it’s a very good shampoo – it left my hair looking great. Is the Control GX ‘Grey Reducing’? It did certainly reduce the grey, after just over 4 weeks of using every other day. I could see that the greys weren’t as prominent, and it hadn’t actually altered my overall hair colour. Take a look at the ‘before’ and ‘after’ below. I imagine if I used it for weeks on end, it could probably damn near eradicate them.

Rather than a gradual loss with mess each time.As a shampoo, Control GX will make your hair sparkle, and slowly chip away at the badger hair. However the hassle during and after each use outweigh the positives, sadly.Note – I was asked by Just for Men Control GX to review this in return for a fee – the review is entirely honest, and my own opinion.
The guy knew exactly what he was getting into. It says use it everyday so the idea of being taken by surprise by this is just silly. The gradual effect of this product makes it almost imperceptible to people who see you regularly. It’s much more gentle that doing total dye job and the progressive change makes it a great way to dark your hair over time, without making any big waves. You’ll look a couple of years younger each week and that’s a great alternative to looking desperate for having gone to dark too fast. In terms of mess, it can get away from you if you’re careless so just take your time and don’t touch a light towel until it’s fully rinsed out.
I began using Just for Men Grey Reducing Shampoo and Conditioner this month. I am still in the trial and error stage. My first 4 shampoos provided excellent results. And I quickly rinsed the shampoo down the shower drain. No problem with staining at all. BUT….I applied the shampoo a 5th time prematurely, and now ALL of my grey hair is gone (The grey hair will return in a few weeks, and my hair color is subtle and natural in appearance, so no one has taken notice.) Moral of the story: Don’t overdo shampooing!
