There are so many benefits to being in the great outdoors. Mental health can see some improvement, general health and of course doing something fun.

Outdoor hobbies are typically great because you can enjoy them with members of your family. Exploring your local area, and further afield too.

Like all hobbies, there might be a little bit of learning involved, but that is what makes them so much fun – and an accomplishment!

Camping

Hotels do have their charm, but there is nothing better than sleeping under the stars. You can also choose how you wish to camp.

You could opt for a campsite filled with other people and families, giving a little bit of a social aspect – and of course with some amenities. Or, you might choose to go wild camping

Camping does require some know-how, like putting tents up, cooking with fewer pots and pans, and learning how thick your sleeping bag and floor mat need to be for a good night’s sleep.

Camping gives you plenty of fresh air, the option to be unplugged for a few days, and some exercise while you explore the area.

For the perfect in-between step, you can opt for glamping. Check out this review – Glamp at The Priory

Fishing

You can combine a camping trip with fishing, or you can check out some local fishing areas for the day.

You’ll want to research what you’ll need in a starter fishing kit and how you can make fishing a family activity if you have interested kids.

The type of fish in your chosen waters will dictate the type of fishing rod, line, and if you should consider liquid baits

Children can start fishing with a net and a bucket in the early days, catching smaller canal and pond fish.

Just make sure that you have the correct fishing licenses or day passes for your country.

Photography

The best camera you have is the one you have in your pocket. Most often, a mobile phone. Find a location that you have always wanted to check out, and go with the intent to start taking photos.

You never know what might spark your interest.

There are lots of different types of outdoor photography. From treescapes to macro photography, the options are endless.

Over time you can build up your photography kit and find a camera that suits your style. Unsplash photographers have shared their favourites, and you might just find the one for you.

Geocaching

Is there something more fun than finding little treasures using technology? It is a modern-day treasure hunt where you can leave treasures, find them, and participate in a large community of geocachers.

To join, you’ll need to download the Geocaching app and then start navigating to your site of choice. There are millions of geocaches spread across the world – all waiting to be discovered.

To be a great geocacher, you must replace it with something else if you take anything from the spot. It should be small enough to fit in the geocaching site and should be something that you can identify as yours.

And that’s it! A few simple but fun outdoor hobbies that anyone can try.
