Delivering great customer service is more than just mastering techniques. It’s also about preparing your clients for all occasions, including holidays.

Over 75% of Brits plan to go abroad in 2024 and spray tanning will be a go-to solution for those who want to maintain a sun-kissed glow, without the risks of sunbathing.

A comprehensive spray tanning course can help you do your part to achieve the best results. However, preparation and maintenance also play a role in this, so give your client clear instructions before the appointment and tips for while they’re travelling.

Preparation

Booking them in is the first step. Spray tans look best after the first 24 hours, so consider an appointment two days ahead of the holiday.

Ask them to exfoliate the day before to clear dead skin cells for an even look. Remind them to remove body hair at least 24 hours before the session to avoid irritation too.

Keeping the skin moisturised leading up to the appointment is important, but they shouldn’t apply lotions, oils or deodorants on the day, as it can lead to uneven application.

The appointment

Ask your client to wear loose, dark clothing and open-toed shoes to prevent smudging. They should take jewellery off and refrain from wearing makeup or heavy perfume.

Tell them to avoid getting wet, sweating and wearing tight clothing for at least 6-8 hours after. This will allow the colour to develop fully and achieve the best results.

Common issues

Even with the best preparation, your client may encounter issues. Fortunately, there are a handful of solutions to overcome them.

  • Patchiness or streaks: Use a touch-up spray or blend with a self-tanning lotion.
  • Fading too quickly: Gradually exfoliate for an even fade and reapply extenders to maintain the colour.
  • Orange tint: Use a remover to lighten the tan and gradually exfoliate to fade the orange tint.
  • Smudging caused by clothing or sweat: Lightly dab and blend with a makeup sponge or wet, clean cloth. A touch-up spray is also ideal for small corrections.
  • Allergic reaction: Remove all solution with soap and water. Use over-the-counter treatments like antihistamines and hydrocortisone cream if needed.

Maintenance while travelling

Travelling can sometimes challenge longevity, but keeping the glow intact is possible with the right care.

Daily moisturising with an oil-free lotion is crucial for extending the tan and preventing dryness. Advise that they minimise chlorine and saltwater exposure, as they can cause it to fade quickly. If they do go for a dip, rinsing off with fresh water immediately can help.

Stress the need for suncream too, as the tan does not provide UV protection. Recommend non-oil-based suncream for protection that doesn’t affect their sun-kissed glow.
