One of the hardest things to do is to let go of technology when you’re travelling. When you go on your vacations, you want to vlog everything and log everything on YouTube and you want to take pictures with your phone and bring your instant camera and have your iPad and your VPN and your hotspot and on and on it goes. It’s tricky to start traveling with technology, but you may have no choice.

If you’re travelling for work, you may need a laptop, and if you’re travelling as a travel Blogger, you may need your iPad with you. There is always a possibility that no matter where you go, you could end up with your valuables going down the drain or being stolen from you. You can even end up with your bank account being hacked into if you don’t invest in a good Faraday bag that has signal blocking protection for electronics. It’s important that if you are going to travel with technology that you do what you can to secure it and have that Peace of Mind. You don’t want to be constantly panicked that somebody is going to manage to pickpocket you. So let’s take a look at some of the top tips that you need for travelling with technology.

  1. Invest in a good, protective bag. Ideally, you don’t have your backpack on your back the whole time. If you can’t see the zippers, that means that you can’t feel or see if anybody’s trying to get into them. A decent protective bag that blocks signals for your electronics and is locked enough that zippers cannot be opened is important. More than that, though, it should be layered so that if anybody tries to cut the bottom of your bag open with a knife, it’s not going to be possible to do so or to reach into your electronics without you at least feeling it.
  2. Get a portable hard drive. The cloud can store certain information, but if you’re working and travelling at the same time, it’s always going to be reassuring to know that you have a backup with you. A portable hard drive is that backup that you need. So before your trip, backup all of your devices and e-mail yourself the critical information that you need. This can include everything from passports and visas to your contacts and reservations. This way, if something is going to happen to your things, you can easily retrieve information wherever you’re going.
  3. Bring a cable organiser. This might not be something you’ve initially considered, but if you’re going to be travelling with quite a lot of technology then you need to have a way to organise it all so it does not get tangled up. A cable organizer in a zip up storage bag with compartments for plugs, cords, chargers, USB drives, a mouse, an e-reader, or a phone is going to be like you having your additional kidney as a backup. You’re going to need it, you’re going to use it, and you’re not going to regret having it. Always make sure that you check it before you leave your hotel as well, because you can pack a list in there of everything that you’ve brought with you so that you can tick against it everywhere you move.
  4. Make sure that you have a universal power adapter. A universal power adapter with USB ports can really help you if you’re travelling across different countries. It’s a handy device and it includes every single socket outlet shape in one place, so if you’re going to multiple countries, you only need to bring one with you and not bring multiple. The USBs allow you to charge multiple devices at once too, which as you know is going to be a game changer.
  5. Bring some travel gadgets. Anti theft bags and wallets to protect your personal info from getting swiped is a must. We’ve already talked about Faraday bags that can help you to protect your electronics, but you can also find  backpacks and purses that are RFID safe. That means that you’ll stop any identity thieves from scanning your passport, credit cards or rental information.
  6. Get travel insurance. This is not something you should ever forget. If something happens to your belongings, even your technology, travel insurance can help you to get your money back, and it can help you to replace what you’ve lost. Anti theft bags, locks and storage backup plans are great, but if someone steals your entire backpack just when you’ve gone to get some food? You need a backup plan!
