Being able to combine seeing the world with your favourite activity may seem like a luxury that few can afford. However, there are ways to do this – triathlons!
Made up of three different disciplines, triathlons are the perfect sport for pushing yourself whilst travelling to compete. By doing so, you will be able to build a global community whilst gaining insight into different communities.
International Triathlon events
If you are a serious triathlete or even just a fan, then it will come as no surprise that there are a variety of global events that you can sign up for.
One of the most iconic is perhaps the Ironman Series, which recently made the news after British racing driver Billy Monger broke the record for completion by a double amputee. These events take place across the globe throughout the year in destinations such as Hawaii, Panama, Oman and New Zealand. They are ideal for combining a must-see destination with a sporting challenge.
Cultural experiences through sport
Being able to travel across the world to compete in triathlons gives you the chance to take a holiday too. Of course, your recovery after competing probably means you won’t be scaling mountains the next day, but you can enjoy the local culture.
For example, heading to Japan for an event means you could take some time after to watch a sumo wrestling basho. For the foodies among the athletes, make sure you find time to try some Japanese barbecue or Kushiyaki.
Building a global community
One of the best things about attending international sporting events is the different people you have the chance to meet. Going to triathlons instantly gives you something to bond over with your fellow competitors, enhancing the chance of a lifelong friendship.
Building a global community helps to strengthen personal relationships as well as sporting opportunities. You may meet people in your local area and feel inspired to set up your own events a bit closer to home. Increasing visibility of sports like triathlons encourages more people to give it a go, making the community larger across the world.
Planning your triathlon travels
It can feel a bit daunting planning a triathlon trip. There are so many extra components to the planning when compared to a normal trip abroad.
The first step is to make sure you have all the race details correct. You will need to qualify for most organised competitions so make sure you have signed up properly before you travel. You will also need to pack for the climate, both for the race and for any rest days surrounding it. There are ways to prepare your body for climate changes such as heat and humidity that you can work into your training in the months before the race.
