Valentine’s Day is looming on the horizon, and many couples will be taking the opportunity to get away for the weekend. In 2025, the day itself falls on a Friday – but, if you want to pull out the stops, you might extend it over Saturday and Sunday, as well.

A good Valentine’s weekend often means putting in the right planning. But exactly what might this involve?

Selecting the Perfect Destination

Arguably the most important consideration of all is your destination. Think about the kind of break you’d like to have. Some couples might prefer to spend a few days snuggled up in a cosy log cabin in the middle of a frozen wilderness. Others might prefer a sightseeing adventure in a major European city. Think about the interests you share, and the things you’ve always expressed an interest in doing. If you’ve always wanted to go skiing, then an impromptu trip to a European resort might provide exactly the right sense of excitement and adventure.

Planning Activities to Share

Trying out new activities for the first time can create a powerful sense of novelty and togetherness. You might recapture some of the excitement you felt on your first few dates together. Which activities you select will depend on your personal tastes, and your chosen destination. You might go for a wine-tasting experience at an overseas vineyard, or you might settle in for a spa session at a remote wellness retreat. Ski weekends tend to offer excitement and adventure, as well as the opportunity to relax and unwind after the slopes have closed.

Choosing Romantic Accommodations

For a romantic break, your choice of accommodation will be pivotal, especially if you know that you’re going to be spending large portions of your time indoors. Try to seek out places with special features, like hot tubs, which might make the weekend feel just a little bit more special. You might even seek out properties that you wouldn’t otherwise have considered. If you’re used to booking a hotel, for example, then opting to rent out a small countryside cottage might take you out of your comfort zone, just a bit.

Adding Personal Touches

If you really want to make the weekend feel special, then a few bespoke touches can be enormously effective. If you know that your significant other favours a certain bottle of wine, then bringing a case along for the trip might be sensible. Surprise activities and dinner dates can also help to generate the required sense of romance.

When you’re choosing your activities, it’s often worth making a decision, and booking, early. Fancy restaurants, in particular, are likely to fill up quickly – so make the call before it’s too late.
